Greg Hansen's top 10 high school girls soccer players in Tucson history

Editorβs note: This summer, Star columnist Greg Hansen is counting down the top 10 of just about everything related to Tucson sports.
Todayβs list: The top 10 high school girls soccer players from Tucson.
The Arizona Interscholastics Association began sponsoring girls soccer in 1990. Ready or not, Salpointe Catholic went 21-0 and won it all.
It was a historic season for a historic team.
The β90 and β91 Lancers, who went a combined 41-1-1, produced three of the leading girls soccer players in Tucson history. To take it a step further, the β90 and β91 Lancers probably had the two best players in Tucson history and three of the first four.
Talk about a good start.
Kelly Walbert Cagle, Erin Fahey and Christine Keeley left Tucson to play college soccer because the UAβs womenβs soccer program did not begin until 1994.
Walbert β now Cagle βΒ went to Duke and became a consensus All-American and 1995 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.
Fahey β now Emenalo β went to Portland and was a first-team All-American goalkeeper as the Pilots finished No. 2 in the NCAA.
Keeley initially went to Washington and then transferred to Arizona where she was the UAβs first impact player, making the All-Pac-10 second team in 1994 and 1995.
Over the 28 years of organized high school soccer in Arizona, Tucson teams have won 19 state championships. The quality of girls soccer in Tucson has been manifest from the beginning. Selecting a Top 10 list brimmed with 25 players who were seriously considered was tough. Hereβs the list:Β

Before becoming a three-time All-American to Duke, Walbert scored 55 goals in her final two seasons for the Lancers. She later was the head coach at Virginia Tech. She was named one of the Top 10 Blue Devils, all sports, from 1990-99.Β

βShe has no fear,ββ Salpointe coach Julian Friend said in 1991 as Fahey became the top goalkeeper in Tucson history. At Portland, she was fourth in the NCAA in fewest goals allowed per game (0.47) in 1995. She later coached at Utah and Virginia Tech and played professionally in Russia.Β

Not only was she the Starβs player of the year twice, she became the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2005, leading Arizona to its lone conference championship. Her two state championship teams at Salpointe helped the Lancers go 91-9-2 in Millerβs varsity career.Β

Scoring 30 goals on Salpointeβs 1992 state championship team, Keeley had 127 goals in her prep career before becoming one of the cornerstone players for the Arizona Wildcats.Β

The Titans lost the 2012 state championship game in overtime, but Stokes was rarely stopped. She scored 137 goals in her PVHS career, including 51 in 2011.Β

Before accepting a scholarship to Colorado, Glad was, in the words of Falcons coach Charlie Kendrick, βthe backbone of our team for the last three years.ββ Those three years, 2010-2012, resulted in back-to-back-to-back state championships.Β

The Caballeros won state championships in 2007 and 2008 and Schultz, who would become Conference USAβs Freshman of the Year at UTEP, scored 47 goals for the title teams, and 37 more as a freshman in 2006.Β

Much like Glad, Monahan helped Foothills win three consecutive state titles, 2005-07. She then went on to become a two-time All-Big Sky player at NAU and has since played professionally in Europe, for the Swedish Elitettan club.Β

A three-time All-Southern Arizona player, 2004-06, Marquez became a starter and team captain and MVP at Arizona. She then played professionally for the Boston Breakers, Atlanta Beat and Buffalo Flash.Β

Before injuries interrupted her career at Arizona, Lopez scored 49 goals in her final two seasons for the Nighthawks.Β

Emily Parker of Catalina Foothills helped the Falcons to two state championships and is now a key part of the Oklahoma Sooners squad. Kelly Haggard scored 25 goals to lead Mountain View to the 1995 state championship. Heather Pelot of Palo Verde scored 62 goals in her Titans career. Sheridan Cohen, the 2012 Southern Arizona player of the year, began her college career at Arizona, but it was ended by an injury.
