The Old Pueblo is nothing if not casual.

“Tucson is so laid-back — it’s not uncommon to go to the symphony and sit next to someone in jeans and a T-shirt,” says Jodi Henderson, who owns Inner Tie boutique. “The holidays are the one time you really have the opportunity to dress up.”

Exactly why interior designer Andrea Wachs pulls out the stops for Angel Charity for Children’s Angel Ball.

Wachs, a Tucson native and Angel member since 2005, says it’s the fanciest event of her family’s holiday season.

“I really have fun putting my outfits together and accessorizing,” says Wachs, who describes her style as minimalist but with an edge.

Here are some tips to look your most festive:

Time to shine

Metallics are big this season, so is cream and gold, says Henderson. “I just think that looks great on the Tucson landscape.”

Max out on style

“The maxi skirt is really big for the holidays,” Henderson says, adding that it’s versatile, too, easily dressed down with a tank or toughened up with a leather jacket for other, less festive occasions.

Not-so-basic black

Many women love to wear a black dress. “Pop it with a fabulous necklace or an updo or an amazing shoe,” suggests Wachs.

Get your money’s worth

Dressier pieces have higher prices, so think about all the different ways you can wear something. If you opt for a short, tunic dress for New Year’s Eve, pair it later with skinny jeans and boots, Henderson says.

Wachs, who shops vintage stores, says she’s reworn the same dress. She makes it look different by pairing it with something new, like a statement necklace.
