Arizona Opera met the challenge and raised more than the $400,000 needed to collect $100,000 from an anonymous Tucson donor.

Arizona Opera’s “50 for 500” fundraising campaign is a lot like running a marathon:

The first few miles are easy; the final stretch is like running full bore all up hill.

But some kind person has helped lower the elevation, throwing down a last-minute challenge to help get the company over the finish line.

The donor has offered to put up $10,000 if the company can raise another $10,000 between now and midnight Tuesday. As of earlier today, the company was $17, 151 off its goal to raise $400,000 in donations from all 50 states. The campaign kicked off in late April and expires at midnight Tuesday.

The “50 for 500” campaign follows back-to-back successful “Million Dollar May” fundraising campaigns in 2013 and ’14.

The opera on Monday reported that it had received donations from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Japan. It has 1,730 annual donors.
