Itโs a busy weekend for classical music in Tucson as three groups open their 2017-18 seasons.
True Concord Voices and Orchestra โMusic of the Royals: The British Are Coming!โ
- Featuring an homage to the late Princess Diana 20 years after her death and her son, Prince William.
- The music: The program includes John Rutter’s “This is the Day,” commissioned for Prince William’s wedding; and John Tavener’s sobering “Song for Athene,” performed at Princess Diana’s funeral after she was killed in a car accident in Paris. Also: Britten’s famous choral piece “Hymn to Saint Cecilia” and works by the Beatles.

Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra
- Featuring guest violinist Chloé Trevor.
- The music: Trevor makes her second appearance with the orchestra — she soloed in May 2015 — and is doing double duty: soloing on Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto and Vivaldi’s “Summer” from “The Four Seasons.” Also: Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1; Dvorák’s “Slavonic Dances” Nos. 5–8.

Arizona Friends of Chamber Music: Now Music
Featuring violinist Benjamin Beilman and pianist Anna Polonsky.
- The music: A little Beethoven (Violin Sonata No. 1 in D) paired with a bit by Brahms (Violin Sonata No. 3 in D) would be reason enough to see this concert. Add in Saint-Saëns; Violin Sonata No. 1 in D minor and the piano-violin duet of Kaija Anneli Saariaho’s “Tocar” and you have a recital that lives up to Arizona Friends’ new name for its Piano and Friends series.
