Laura Paredes-Oldaker, dueña de un negocio local, pensó que las palabras que aparecieron frente a ella en la pantalla eran parte de una broma.
El miércoles 13 de noviembre por la mañana, la fundadora y directora general de By Your Self Senior Care, de 36 años de edad, se enteró de que había sido nombrada la Empresaria del Año de la Serie de Pequeños Negocios Latinos de Verizon Wireless.
El premio incluye 25 mil dólares en efectivo, cinco dispositivos móviles y servicio gratuito por un año.
Los representantes de Verizon sorprendieron a Paredes-Oldaker con el anuncio en su oficina al norte de la ciudad. Creyendo que era simplemente una finalista para el premio, le mostraron un video del ganador del año pasado, el cual terminaba con un mensaje que anunciaba que ella había ganado.
“¿Es real?”, preguntó Paredes-Oldaker antes de soltar el llanto y recibir abrazos y palabras de apoyo de muchos miembros de su familia y empleados que estaban reunidos para el anuncio.
Paredes-Oldaker empezó a trabajar con adultos mayores en varios campos luego de graduar de la preparatoria Tucson, en 1994.
“Descubrí que el cuidado en casa, para mí, era la forma de crear el mayor impacto posible en la vida de alguien, llegando a sus casas y ayudándolos a seguir siendo independientes”, dijo.
Hace unos seis años, decidió volver al terreno en el que ella se había apasionado, después de que estalló la crisis económica. Ella y su esposo eran agentes inmobiliarios luchando con el declive del mercado de bienes raíces.
“Decidí volver a mis raíces”, dijo. “Recordé cuánto lo amaba y empecé a trabajar de nuevo con los ancianos”.
Un año después, ella y su esposo, Justin, fundaron By Your Side Senior Care.
“Me di cuenta de todas las historias de horror que aparecían en los periódicos sobre gente maltratada por sus cuidadores o que eran multados por negligencia, y simplemente pensé, tiene que haber una mejor manera de hacer esto”, dijo Paredes-Oldaker.
El negocio empezó con un solo cuidador, Paredes-Oldaker, y un solo cliente. Ha crecido a 35 cuidadores, cuatro supervisores y unos 30 clientes, la mayoría de los cuales ha encontrado a la empresa por recomendaciones personales.
Paredes-Oldaker se sintió motivada a presentarse al premio de Verizon después de asistir a una conferencia nacional de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana en Chicago a principios del año.
“Yo pensé, tú sabes, tenemos muchas cosas buenas sucediendo en Tucsón y en nuestra comunidad, y quizá pudiéramos levantar un poco más a Tucsón y a la comunidad de la tercera edad para que ganen un poquito del respeto que se merecen”, dijo.
Pero nunca imaginó que ganaría.
Los premios serán un gran impulso para el negocio en crecimiento de Paredes-Oldaker.
“Uno de los grandes retos a los que nos enfrentamos siendo yo una latina que iniciaba un negocio fue el acceso a los fondos, al capital para hacer crecer el negocio”, dijo. “Hay muchos buenos programas en la ciudad, pero sólo te ayudan cuando quieres brincar al siguiente nivel, hay una especie de vacío”.
Este es el quinto año que Verizon otorga el reconocimiento, y 724 personas lo solicitaron. La compañía selecciona a un ganador que haya “demostrado un fuerte liderazgo y un espectacular éxito en su industria”, de acuerdo al comunicado de prensa de Verizon.

Local business owner Laura Paredes-Oldaker thought the words on the screen in front of her were part of a joke.
Wednesday morning, the 36-year-old founder and CEO of By Your Side Senior Care learned she was named Verizon Wireless’ Latino Small Business Series Entrepreneur of the Year. The award comes with a $25,000 cash prize, five free mobile devices and service for one year.
Verizon representatives surprised Paredes-Oldaker with the announcement at her company’s north-side office. She thought she was a finalist for the award and was shown a video of last year’s winner, which ended with a message announcing her win.
“Is this real?” Paredes-Oldaker asked before tearing up and receiving hugs and words of support from several family members and employees who had gathered for the announcement.
Paredes-Oldaker started working with seniors in various settings after graduating from Tucson High School in 1994.
“I found that in-home care, for me, was the way to make the biggest impact in someone’s life, to come into their home and help them stay independent,” she said.
She decided to get back into the field she was passionate about six years ago after the economy crashed. She and her husband were real estate investors struggling with the decline of the real estate market.
“I decided to get back to my roots,” she said. “I remembered how much I loved it and started working with the elderly again.”
About a year later, she and her husband, Justin, founded By Your Side Senior Care.
“I noticed all of the horror stories that were showing up in the papers about people being mistreated by their caregivers or being fined for negligence, and I just thought, there’s got to be a better way of doing this,” Paredes-Oldaker said.
The business started with one caregiver, a role filled by Paredes-Oldaker, and one client and has since grown to 35 caregivers, four managers and about 30 clients, who have found the business mostly through word of mouth.
Paredes-Oldaker was inspired to apply for the Verizon award after attending a U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce conference in Chicago earlier this year.
“I thought, you know, we have a lot of great things going on in Tucson and a lot of great things going on in our community, and maybe we could lift Tucson and the elderly community up a little bit more to earn them a little bit of the respect that they deserve,” she said.
She never imagined she’d win.
The prizes will be a big boost for Paredes-Oldaker’s growing business.
“One of the biggest challenges we encounter as a Latina starting a business is access to funds, access to capital to grow your business,” she said. “There are some good programs here in town, but they only help you so much, when you want to grow to the next level, there’s kind of a void.”
This is the fifth year Verizon has offered the award, and 724 people applied. The company selects one winner who has “demonstrated powerful leadership and outstanding success in their industry,” according to a Verizon news release.
