Top trails: Ventana Canyon Trail

The sun sets along the Ventana Canyon Trail, cut into the front range of the Catalinas.

Temperatures hit 109 degrees Monday just before 4 p.m., breaking the daily record for August 5.Β 

Until Monday, the highest temperature recorded for August 5 was 108 degrees in 2009, according to the National Weather Service.Β 

An excessive heat warning was in place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.Β 

The weather is expected to cool down in coming days, with Tuesday's high expected to reach 104 degrees and Wednesday's high expected at 101 degrees.Β 

Isolated thunderstorms are expected through the week as well.Β
