The judges were stumped throughout season 13 of ”The Masked Singer.”
That’s the show where celebrities hide their true identities behind elaborate if not goofy costumes and face off against one another in an attempt to fool the celebrity judges.
After eight performances that had judges Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Rita Ora and Robin Thicke scratching their heads, Thicke was finally able to identify Pearl, the gold-crowned humanoid, as country singer Gretchen Wilson.
“This is without a doubt the craziest thing I ever agreed to do, and it ended up being one of the most rewarding,” Wilson said on her website.
Gretchen Wilson, standing, is bringing her labelmate Jessie G. to Tucson for a show Saturday at Desert Diamond Casino.
If the judges were true country fans, the hints dropped during the show’s 13-week run last spring should have been no-brainers, including that she loves playing in dive bars.
Hello? “Redneck Woman?”
Don’t be surprised if Wilson mentions her “Masked Singer” experience when she takes the stage at Desert Diamond Casino, 1100 W. Pima Mine Road, on Saturday, Nov. 22. It will be her first Tucson show since she opened for Big and Rich at Kino Park on a stormy September Saturday in 2011.
Wilson comes here with her catalogue of nine studio albums and 10 Top 10 hits including her Grammy-winning debut single “Redneck Woman,” which clung on Billboard’s No. 1 spot for six weeks in 2004.
That song, released ahead of her debut album, was Wilson’s unapologetic anthem of her country bona fides, from her rebel yell to her working-class roots.
Wilson is touring with newcomer Jessie G, the Oregon native signed to Wilson’s independent Redneck Records. Saturday’s show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $49-$75 through ddcaz.com.
