200-year-old Torah

Beth Nakhai, an associate professor at the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies, unrolls a 200-year-old torah scroll in front of her students in an independent-study class on biblical Hebrew. A rabbi will do restoration work on the document.

For the second year, the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Arizona will host a conference about modern Israeli society, including possible futures for the country as a Jewish or democratic state.

Talks at the Modern Israel Conference "Balancing Unity and Diversity: Israel's Changing Society and Politics" begin 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 and Monday, Dec. 5 and span most of each day. The Arizona Daily Star is a sponsor of the conference.

Professors from the UA and other universities will speak in the Student Union Memorial Center's South Ballroom on the UA campus (1303 E. University Blvd.).

The conference will conclude with a dinner and final lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5. Titled "Israel 2016: Vision and Reality," the talk and meal will take place at the Tucson Marriott University Park, 880 E. Second St.

The conference costs $100 per person or $150 for two people. Students can pay $30. The cost to attend the dinner is separate from the conference fee and is $50. To make reservations for the dinner, contact the center.

Registration is required.
