Free ‘Taste of Judaism’ covers basics of faith

Temple Emanu-El will bring the Jewish faith to you as part of its 16th year of the Taste of Judaism program.

The free, three-class series explores history, culture and spirituality, according to press materials.

A family class will also offer a program for children, and several courses will include an American Sign Language interpretation.

Here are the series offered in August:

• 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 16, 23 and 30 at the Tucson Hebrew Academy, 3822 E. River Road. The family class and ASL interpretation are available.
• 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 17, 24 and 31 at Nanini Library, 7300 N. Shannon Road.
• 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 20, 27 and Sept. 3, Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road.

Film explores Western culture, Buddhism

Friday night is movie night at the Awam Tibetan Buddhist Institute, 3400 E. Speedway.

Along with hosting a potluck dinner, the institute will show “When the Iron Bird Flies: Tibetan Buddhism Arrives in the West” at 6 p.m. Aug. 21, Jane Stanley, an active member at the institute, said in an email.

The documentary explores the interaction between Buddhist teachings and Western culture.

Moviegoers may bring a dish to share and a donation.

17th-century Anglican Church is lecture topic

St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., will continue its summer lecture series “Protestantism and the Anglican Church in the Seventeenth Century,” Sunday, Aug. 16.

The lectures, presented by the University of Arizona’s Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies, will continue through Sunday, Aug. 30.

Sunday’s lecture on Charles I and William Laud will be taught by a UA master’s student. UA Professor Ute Lotz-Heumann will give additional context, according to the church.
