Rally planned to affirm court decision
St. Philipβs in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., will host a rally Monday to affirm the U.S. Supreme Courtβs Friday decision that allows same-sex couples to marry.
The Wingspan Multi-Faith Working Group has invited religious leaders and elected officials to speak on the history of LGBT rights and the role of the progressive faith community in that cause. The event runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Leaders from St. Philipβs in the Hills Episcopal Church, St. Markβs Presbyterian Church and Congregation or Chadash will speak, along with state Rep. Victoria Steele and Tucson Councilwoman Karin Uhlich.
The Episcopal Diocese of Arizona applauded the Supreme Court decision, but faith communities are still divided. Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson released a statement Friday acknowledging that the decision does not correspond with the Catholic Churchβs teaching of marriage as βa lifelong commitment between a man and a womanβ but βreflects a changing attitude in our country...β The statement added that βSince the Church believes that every person is made in the image of God, it follows that each person is to be treated with dignity and respect.β
