Schoolโs almost out. Sigh.
While these last months are hard for parents trying to figure out what the kids will do all summer, itโs even harder for the kids.
You may remember how long and brutal the last part of the school year felt, when all you could think about was lazy days by the pool with your friends or a family vacation at the beach.
So, how do you help the kids keep their focus?
We asked for advice from teachers and parents who have been there.
Rebecca Casillas, mother of two: โWe do a big reward. At the beginning of the year, we let them know if they keep their grades up then they get to pick something out. So, when they start slacking, we remind them itโs almost there. So close. Just keep it up.โ
Elizabeth Egan, third grade teacher, mother of one: โI believe that getting kids involved in the learning is important to maintaining motivation for learning. To motivate with reading, go to the public library or a book store and encourage kids to find new interesting books. I also think anything to learn from the community is great, like the Tucson Festival of Books, and visiting museums around town. Realizing that learning can be a family affair and learning is everywhere.โ
Autumn Klesch, first grade teacher: โThis is especially important for those kiddos gearing up for the high-stakes test coming their way shortly. I think the beginning of the school year is such an exciting time. Perhaps relive those moments. Maybe purchase a few motivating school supplies and a new book or maybe even a new outfit. Ideally, I think itโs nice to gain a fresh outlook and push through strong in the final days of the school year.โ
Lisa Tillich, mother of one: Summer incentives work for Tillichโs son. โI say, โKeep up the good work. Schoolโs almost out. Then we can go on vacation.โ Or sign them up for summer programs. They get to pick different places to go like bowling and swimming. Just different activities.โ
