A literary festival for teens is in the books for Saturday, April 30, at the University of Arizona Poetry Center.

The second annual Lit Press Fest for Teens is a mini-conference for teens, teachers and parents who are interested in editing a literary magazine — or do already.

Making zines and chapbooks (which are small books or pamphlets) and the logistics of editing and supporting a school literary magazine will be the subjects du jour at the one-day fest.

“We’re looking to connect youth with our resources and invite them in to give them the opportunity to explore and to create journals and magazines in their own community that reflects their interests,” says Renee Angle, the center’s education program coordinator.

Festival events include bookmaking and creative writing workshops along with tours of the Poetry Center rare book room. Teens can also meet editors and book artists, explore a gallery of resources and view how-to panels on how to edit, curate, publicize and distribute creative work.

There will also be a couple of book binding demonstrations, free food and a DJ.

“Everyone gets a free blank writing journal,” Angle says. “It will be a fun day.”
