Lee Johnson

Lee Johnson, who’s had three back surgeries: β€œIf it’s painful sitting at home, it might as well be painful at the gym.”

Lee Johnson placed fourth in Saturday’s NPC Terminator over-50 bodybuilding competition at the Fox Tucson Theatre.

And while fourth meant last in the four-person contest, Johnson, 72, is not discouraged.

After all, he hasn’t competed in 11 years. And he has five titanium joints.

β€œIt was worth it because I re-established myself with some friends, and people came up that I didn’t know and said I looked awesome even if I didn’t win,” said Johnson, who was profiled in Sunday’s Star.

Johnson estimates that his competitors were all closer to the 50-year-old benchmark and heavier than he. He’s calling this contest a β€œtune-up” and already has his eye on future competitions.

Lee Johnson just might be back.
