With larger dogs comprising 90 percent of Pima Animal Care Center’s population, the shelter is offering a “Go Big and Go Home” sale this weekend with adopters naming their fee on all dogs weighing more than 30 pounds.
As of Monday, PACC had 370 dogs in its care and only two open kennels in the tent that’s used to house incoming dogs.
Because of the increase of dogs taken in during summer months, PACC is trying to find homes for as many of the current occupants as they can.
During the summer, PACC takes in as many as 50 dogs a day.
“Our shelter does not have the capacity to humanely house more dogs than we already have and with spring season in full swing, we’re taking in many new pets each day,” said Karen Hollish, PACC director of development and marketing.
Bigger dogs often get overlooked at the shelter, which is another reason for the adoption event.
“Big dogs are amazing family dogs and terrific companions for all the activities that make Southern Arizona great, from camping to hiking to running,” Hollish said. “And if you’re looking for an older and slower snuggle buddy, we have plenty of those waiting, too.”
The name-your-own-price adoption event runs through Sunday, April 30.
PACC’s shelter is located at 4000 N. Silverbell Road and is open from noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
All shelter pets come spayed or neutered, with age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip and a voucher for its first vet visit.
A standard $17 licensing fee will also apply to all adult dogs.
