Above: Ironworker Orland Phillips affixed an American flag to the last steel beam of the new Banner-University Medical Center Tucson building Wednesday. As part of an ancient Scandinavian tradition, a tree was also raised. The new nine-story building, which is scheduled for completion by April 2019, is 160 feet high and west of the existing building.

Right: While on their break, hospital workers Cecilia Campos, left, and Veronica Franco, who sterilize surgical instruments, waited for the last steel beam to be raised. When the building is completed, their department is scheduled to move into the fourth floor.
