A 16-year-old boy was killed late Wednesday, when his car rolled over on East Golf Links Road, authorities said.

Shortly after 11 p.m., Tucson police officers responded to reports of the crash, and foundΒ Daniel Monarez Yanez laying on the ground next to the wrecked car, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

OfficersΒ immediatelyΒ rendered first aid and Yanez was taken to a hospital, where he later was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Through their investigation, traffic detectives learned that Yanez was traveling westbound on Golf Links in his Honda Civic, and had stopped behind another vehicle at the red light at South Swan Road, Bay said.

When the light turned green, both drivers "accelerated rapidly" through the intersection, and changed from the median lane to middle lane, before changing lanes again while approaching a curve, Bay said.

Detectives believe Yanez lost control of his vehicle, struck the raised median, causing the car to roll over and land upside down in the westbound lanes of Golf Links.

Police believe that Yanez was not wearing his seat belt.

The driver of the second vehicle fled the scene, but was later contacted by police, Bay said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
