Authorities are investigating after the body of a dead horse was found dumped in a rural area southeast of Tucson Wednesday.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the Arizona State Livestock Department are trying to determine the circumstances of the animal’s death, a sheriff’s department news release said.

Deputies were dispatched around around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a horse carcass near East Old Spanish Trail and South X9 Ranch Road in Vail.

“Initial investigation indicated the horse was deceased prior to being discarded at that location,’ the news release said.

No further details were available on Friday.

Authorities are asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to call 911 or 88-CRIME
