Two people were displaced and a dog killed in a Tuesday night fire in central Tucson.

Two people were displaced from their home after they returned from an errand Tuesday night to find the residence on fire, authorities said.

At about 9:20 p.m. a 63-year-old man and 62-year-old woman called 911 after discovering that the home, located in the 3700 block of East 27th Street, was filled with smoke, said Capt. Andy Skaggs, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

The couple tried to find what was burning but were unsuccessful and went outside to wait for fire crews. The first unit on the scene found smoke coming from the eaves and a small fire in the front room, but were quickly able to enter the home, Skaggs said.

Firefighters cut a hole in the roof over where the fire was located and extinguished the blaze inside the home, which suffered fire damage to the front room and hallway and smoke damage throughout the residence, Skaggs said.

Ten units and 25 firefighters brought the fire under control within 10 minutes of arriving. Neither resident was injured, but one of the couple's dogs did not survive the fire, Skaggs said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
