Barby Goldschmid, center with bell, and students in the St. Philip’s in the Hills after-school music program.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Barby Goldschmid.

Nominated by: Yonny Beers.

Why: Goldschmid is the former director and now volunteer at the After School Music and Homework Program at St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church. During her time as director she supervised volunteers who served as tutors, mentors and role models for children in grades 3-5, wrote Beers. The students attend the program four days a week after school and are fed a healthy snack, receive music training and homework help. While Goldschmid officially retired from her directorship, she still dedicates her time as a volunteer. “It is Barby’s leadership, continued support, gentle spirit and infectious joy that helps makes the program a huge success,” Beers wrote.
