Terra the tamandua clings to a teddy bear substitute for her mother as she waits to be weighed at the Reid Park Zoo. The month-old baby tamandua, born on April 22, weighed 1.6 pounds on Monday. The twice-a-week weigh-in and veterinary check last only a few minutes, and otherwise the baby stays attached to her mother most of the time. The zoo is working with Southern Tamandua SSP to place several of its tamanduas and to continue a breeding program. Though not on exhibit, zoo tamanduas make regular appearances during education programs and formal presentations. Tamanduas are a species of anteater. Northern tamanduas live from Mexico to South America.
