The owner of a severely emaciated dog turned into the Pima County Animal Care Center is facing multiple charges related to the abuse of the dog, authorities said.
Maya, the 14-year-old Lhasa Apso mix arrived at PACC last week, severely emaciated and suffering from a maggot infestation.
The owner, who hasn't been identified, has been charged with cruelty and neglect, for failing to seek medical attention for the dog. The person could be facing a fine of up to $2,500, jail time of up to 6 months, and probation of up to 3 years, said PACC spokeswoman, Karen Hollish.
PACC's medical team is caring for Maya, who was surrendered for euthanasia by her owner last week, PACC said in a news release. The owner reportedly kept the dog outside because it was too dirty to be around their child. The dog is now with a foster family.
In the four days she's been with PACC, Maya has increased her body weight by 20 percent, and was walking around and wagging her tail for the first time on Friday, Hollish said.
The dog is partially blind due to eye infections that went untreated and suffers from advanced dental disease.
“Maya’s case proves there are consequences for neglecting your pet in Pima County,” said Adam Ricci, PACC’s enforcement operations manager. “If you witness pet cruelty or neglect, please call and report it to Pima Animal Care.”
