Wildfire Season

A motorist passes a sign warning of high fire danger Friday on Redington Road. The Aliso Fire, which had charred approximately 130 acres, is burning in nearby Redington Pass. Near Sonoita, the Oak Tree Fir Fire, burning since Wednesday, was nearly contained.

Extra fire restrictions go into effect Tuesday May 1 at Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Forest and other locations, a state news release said.

State wildlife areas and state trust lands in unincorporated areas also are covered by the ban on campfires, chain saws, outdoor smoking, random gunfire and other potential ignition sources for wildfires, said the news release from the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

The new restrictions start at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Pima, Pinal, Cochise, Greenlee, Graham and Santa Cruz counties.

They come as authorities prepare for a wildfire season characterized by extremely dry conditions and gusty winds.
