An arrest has been made in the drive-by shooting last week that killed a man and wounded his son, Tucson police said.
Anthony Fimbres, 47, was arrested after detectives learned he had purchased a Toyota SUV that was linked to the drive-by shooting, police said on Friday in a new release.
Fimbres was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of discharging a firearm at a residence and one count of being a prohibited possessor of a gun.
On April 6, Tucson police were called to the scene of a shooting where a 51-year-old man was killed.
Jesus Castro was in his pickup truck talking to his two adult sons outside a home in the 8100 block of East 20th Street, near East 22nd Street and South Pantano Road, when a vehicle pulled up next to the truck and the occupants opened fire with an assault rifle and a handgun, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a police spokesman.
The shooters raced away before police arrived.
Castro and one of his sons were shot, but the second son was not hit, police said. Castro died at the hospital and his son, who is in 20s, was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
Dugan says the shooting did not appear to be random.
As they were investigating the shooting, police learned about a vehicle fire nearby. Officers discovered a gold Toyota Sequoia engulfed in flames in an alley near East Kenyon Drive and South Sherwood Village Drive. The vehicle fire was only a few streets away from the shooting scene.
The vehicle on fire matched the description of the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting, police said.
On Monday, detectives learned that Fimbres had purchased the Toyota Sequoia just prior to the drive-by shooting, police said. Detectives located him and questioned him about the shooting. After a search of his house and the collection of more evidence, police said Fimbres was arrested.
Additional suspects are believed to be involved in the shooting. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call 88-CRIME.
