A male suspect remains in a Tucson hospital after being shot during an attempted carjacking of a woman's vehicle on Friday night, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area of South Sixth Avenue and East Pennsylvania Drive at about 8:40 p.m. for a report of a shooting. They found an adult male on the ground with an obvious gunshot wound.

An adult female, who was determined to be the shooter, stayed at the scene and complied with commands from officers. Tucson Fire Department paramedics then began rendering aid to the man.

Police detectives learned the female was leaving a store in the 4400 block of South Sixth Avenue. When she attempted to close her vehicle door, the man approached with a hatchet and demanded her keys.

The female retrieved a handgun and commanded the man to leave, a department news release said. When the man raised the hatchet, she fired and kept the man at the scene until officers arrived.

Charges for the suspect are pending upon his release from the hospital.
