A driver who was pulled over for a traffic violation Friday was released before South Tucson police officers discovered 226 pounds of marijuana in the man's truck.

Shortly after noon on June 23, the driver of a Dodge pickup was pulled over for a traffic violation at South Sixth Avenue and the Interstate 10 frontage road, said Sgt. Detective Bryce Gardner, a South Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Armando Espinoza-Tirado, 32, who was driving the pickup with a Sonora, Mexico license plate, was cited and released, Gardner said.

Prior to the truck being towed, an inventory search was conducted and an officer discovered several bales of marijuana wrapped in burlap and plastic wrap. The bundles had carrying straps.

The marijuana was in the truck's bed under a hard cover.

Police were continuing the investigation.Β
