Fatal train accident

A pedestrian has been struck and killed by a train in downtown.

Tucson police have released details in the Friday afternoon death of a man who was struck by a train downtown.

Just after 4 p.m., officers responded to reports of the incident on East Toole Avenue and North 7th Avenue, Tucson police spokeswoman, Sgt. Kimberly Bay, wrote in a news release.

Tucson Fire Department was already on scene when police arrived, and pronounced the victim deceased. His identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified.

Witnesses told detectives that they saw the man standing in the roadway crossing, inside the downed crossing arms, before he stepped in front of the oncoming train, Bay said.

The conductor and engineer immediately used the emergency braking system, but the train was unable to stop before striking the man.
