An unidentified man who witnesses say was throwing rocks at passing cars Saturday night died of self-inflicted wounds, Tucson police say.
The incident started about 7 p.m. when several people called 911 to say a man was throwing rocks at passing cars in the 1000 block of West Miracle Mile, near North Fairview Avenue.
Officers found the man, who "produced an edged implement and began to harm himself," police said in a news release.
Officers used less-lethal devices to try to stop the man, but he ran off. They again used the devices to keep the man from entering a nearby business, the release said.
Police rendered first aid until paramedics arrived, but the man died, the release said.
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, the multi-agency group usually used to investigate police-involved shootings, was activated to handle the criminal investigation of the incident.
