A 56-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when two off-road vehicles collided in a desert area on Tucson's southeast side, police said.

The crash occurred about 7:15 p.m. in the 6000 block of East Alexander Anton Lane, a desert area behind the Pima Air and Space Museum.

Cheryl Jeanene Cathey was a passenger in a red Polaris RZR parallel to a blue 2018 RZR on separate dirt roads. The vehicles collided and rolled when the roads merged, police said in a news release.

Police say Cathey, who was not wearing the vehicle's harness, died at the crash scene. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the blue vehicle was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The investigation continues.
