Authorities have identified the cyclist who was fatally struck by a wrong-way driver on Tucson's "A" Mountain Thursday morning, according to police.
Officers responded to Sentinel Peak Road for reports of a cyclist struck by a car at 9:30 a.m., said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson police spokesman.
The bicyclist, 73-year-old Richard E. Ellwanger, was found unresponsive near the top of the mountain. He was wearing a helmet and was riding the correct way when the driver, 20-year-old Yanibra Moreno, crashed into him.
He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Moreno, who police say appeared to be impaired by alcohol use, was driving the wrong way when the crash occurred.
Police say after Moreno crashed into the cyclist, she continued down the mountain, hitting another man and woman before crashing the car into large landscaping boulders in the parking lot at the base of the mountain. The pair was treated for minor injuries.
Moreno and another man who was a passenger in the car tried to walk away after the crash, but community members stopped the duo from leaving the area, Dugan said.
Moreno was taken to the hospital due to the level of her intoxication and for minor injuries, according to police. She was later booked into the Pima County jail on a $100,000 bond. She faces felony charges for hit-and-run, two counts of aggravated assault, and second degree murder.
Police are still investigating the crash. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police or the anonymous tip line 88-CRIME.
