Abby Jackson, holding bell, is a teacher at Desert Sky Middle School.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is β€œbelled.”

Last week’s recipient: Abby Jackson.

Nominated by: Sharon Goldwasser.

Why: Jackson is a teacher at Desert Sky Middle School. She combines a high level of expectations for her students while building meaningful relationships with them, wrote Goldwasser in the nomination letter. Also, when she learned her son had Type-1 diabetes, she became a voice for community education about juvenile diabetes. She has taken on a major fundraising role for the nonprofit JDRF, which raises money for research into juvenile diabetes. If that wasn’t enough, Goldwasser wrote, Jackson and her husband recently welcomed into their home for two months five children who needed a place to live until their family situation improved. β€œI cannot think of a more deserving, generous and caring person to recommend for this honor,” Goldwasser said.
