A 22-year-old migrant from Guatemala convicted of assault on a border agent was sentenced to prison, authorities say.

Pedro Anival Coc-Caal, of Tectitan, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, pleaded guilty to assault on a federal agent on June 24. On Sept. 3, U.S. District Judge John C. Hinderake sentenced Coc-Caal to 24 months in prison, a news release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona said.

Coc-Caal was arrested in August 2023 after crossing into Arizona from Mexico. He punched and kicked the border agent as he was being placed in handcuffs and ran off before being tracked down by other officers, the news release said.
