A 29-year-old Mexican national was sentenced to 6.5 years in federal prison in a drug trafficking and firearms case.
Last week, Ruben Betancourt-Hernandez, of Tuxpan, Veracruz, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jennifer G. Zipps. Betancourt-Hernandez had previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and to the use of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, states a news release.
On Sept. 13, 2016, Border Patrol agents near Sonoita tracked a group of five people who were suspected drug smugglers.
Two men, who were wearing camouflage shirts and pants, were captured. Agents found two bundles of marijuana, and two assault rifles similar to an AR-15 and AK-47, officials said.
In addition to the rifles, agents also seized magazines, and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.
During court proceedings, Bentancourt-Hernandez said he planned to deliver the marijuana to other members of the drug organization. He also said he carried an assault rifle to protect the drug load, said officials.Β
