The Tucson Botanical Gardens is expanding into a neighboring garden.

It has acquired the Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson, a block to the south of its location at 2150 N. Alvernon Way.

Visitors push floating lanterns on the Koi pond at Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson.

Founded by Patricia Deridder in 2011, Yume was designed as a serene environment featuring eight gardens, including a Dry River Garden, Koi Pond, and Bamboo Garden.

Tucson Botanical Gardens is planning some infrastructure projects within the three-quarter-acre space.

The Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson will be taken over and operated by the Tucson Botanical Gardens.

Deridder will continue to serve on Yume Garden’s advisory board.

“Yume began as a treeless space with compacted desert soil,” she said. “It was intended as a heartfelt tribute to Japanese culture (and) under the caring stewardship of Tucson Botanical Gardens, I know that these intentions will be respected.”

Michelle Conklin, president and CEO, said the Tucson Botanical Gardens says she is “deeply honored.”

Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson includes a koi pond.

“With great care and respect, we are committed to preserving its spirit and ensuring it remains a place of inspiration and serenity for generations to come,” Conklin said.

The property is expected to reopen to the public in early 2026.

The bamboo alley is popular among visitors to Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson., which has been acquired by Tucson Botanical Gardens.
