Canyon del Oro High School students sending Ben’s Bells to Parkland, Florida

CDO students sending kindness coins to Fla.

Following the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, students from Canyon del Oro High School decided to create and send Ben’s Bells Kindness Coins to the approximately 3,300 students and faculty members there.

The students painted the coins and have handwritten the names of every student killed in a school shooting since Columbine in Colorado on the tags, as well as that of their former elementary school classmate, Christina-Taylor Green, who was the youngest victim of the shooting at former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Gifford’s Congress on Your Corner event in 2011.

With the support of their teacher, Tori Mattia, the students are raising money to pay for supplies and shipping to send the coins to Parkland.

Tucson High teacher Levey receives award

Tucson High Magnet School teacher Ondrea Levey has been honored with the March Teacher Excellence Award from Tucson Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot.

Levey, a 2-D art teacher, was nominated by her friend Casney Tadeo.

“She provides a safe, positive environment for her students to discover themselves through creativity and art,” Tadeo said of Levey.

Winners receive a $100 gift card from OfficeMax/Office Depot, $250 cash courtesy of Tucson Electric Power and the Helios Education Foundation, and school supplies.

Mountain View High School Early Childhood Education students earned three gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America 2018 State Leadership Conference.

In addition to winning medals, three students qualified for the 2018 FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

FCCLA is a national organization that helps students become leaders and address personal, family, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education.

DeGrazia chess team qualifies for tourney

DeGrazia Elementary School’s chess teams won trophies at the Arizona Southern Regional State Qualifying Chess Team Championships and qualified to compete at the 2018 Arizona State Chess Team Championships to be held on April 14 and 15 in Gilbert.

Christian Yepiz, Caleb Larcom, Noah Hart and Vincent Nguyen earned the first-place team trophy in the primary qualifying division. Christian won four out of five games to earn an individual trophy, and Caleb won three out of five games to earn a medallion.

The elementary team of Stephen Somogyi, Brandon Taylor, Jacob Hart and Jerimiah White earned the second-place trophy in the elementary qualifying division. Stephen and Brandon earned medallions by winning three out of five rounds.

Tucson Country Day celebrates 50 years

Tucson Country Day School is inviting the community to help celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The school will hold a reunion and open house, including STEAM activities, a historic scavenger hunt, a student-made 3-D school model, fine-arts performances and food.
