An agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection was killed Friday in a single-vehicle crash on I-19, officials said.
The driver, identified as Edgard Garcia, sustained fatal injuries in the crash, saidΒ Kameron Lee, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Shortly after 5 p.m., DPS troopers responded to the wreck on I-19 near milepost 12, and learned that the vehicle was traveling southbound on I-19 when it crossed the median and northbound lanes, striking a tree, Lee said.
It's currently unknown why Garcia's car crossed the median, but he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, Lee said.
Sgt. Robert Fierros, a Nogales Police Department spokesman, posted on social media Friday night that a multi-agency police escort was travelling to Tucson from Nogales to pay respects to a federal officer.
Saturday morning, Fierros identified the officer as Garcia and said that he was a CBP agent.
