Tucson has a diverse group of people and businesses. Their signs communicate change of status, hopes and fears during the coronavirus pandemic. After protests in Tucson on May 29 and May 30, in response to the killing of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis police custody, business owners put up signs to deter some protesters from breaking their windows. Be Kind murals were painted on plywood boards and some business owners showed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
