The Pima County jail mistakenly released a sex offender Monday, who was caught and taken back into custody Tuesday, the Sheriff's Department says.
David M. Samaniego Sr., 72, had recently been convicted at trial of multiple felony counts involving crimes against children, including sexual conduct with a minor, kidnapping and a drug offense involving minors, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.
He was released Monday afternoon due to an administrative error, the department said. "Staff are working with the Pima County Attorney’s Office and Pima County Superior Court to address the matter. An internal review is underway," the news release said.
Sheriff's detectives, with a court-authorized arrest warrant, then apprehended Samaniego at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday "near downtown Tucson without incident."
The sheriff's Fugitive Investigations Unit coordinated with the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI, leading to the capture, the news release said.
