A 29-year-old man who was killed Saturday in a shootout with Marana police has been identified.
The incident started about 5:30 p.m. when Tobin Pico was pulled over for a traffic violation in the 4100 block of West Ina Road, just west of North Thornydale Road, according to a news release Wednesday from the Pima County Regional Critical Incident Team. The multi-agency group investigates police-involved shootings.
Pico was determined to be impaired, but he ran from officers as he was being put into handcuffs, the release said. During the chase officers realized Pico was carrying a gun.
Just after 6 p.m. an officer shot Pico with a rifle as he ran toward open businesses, the release said.
Pico was struck, but he got up and continued moving toward the open businesses in the 6900 block of North Thornydale Road.
Soon after, Pico was struck again in a shootout with officers, the release said. No officers were wounded. Pico died at the scene.
The officers who discharged their firearms have been identified as: Brad Gill, a 12-year veteran; Jacob McCarthy, a 6-year veteran; and Max Wozniak, a 7-year veteran.
The Tucson Police Department and the University of Arizona Police Department have been assigned primary responsibility for the criminal investigation. The Marana Police Department is conducting a separate administrative investigation to review the officers' actions.
Findings from the investigation will be presented to the Pima County Attorney's Office, which is standard procedure.
