Two 14-year-old girls and the mother of one of them have been linked to the recent theft of 25 guinea pigs from a Marana house being used as an animal rescue, authorities say.

The case started Sept. 23 when the Pima County Sheriff’s Department began its investigation of a break-in at the house in the 5800 block of West Oasis Road, near West Twin Peaks Road and West Linda Vista Boulevard.

Video of two teen girls disabling a surveillance camera at the shelter just before the theft was widely circulated on social media, the department said in a news release.

Last week 25 guinea pigs were snatched from a Marana being used as an animal rescue. Two teen girls and the mother of one of them have been linked to the rodent heist, authorities say.

On Friday investigators found a witness and it led to a search of a home in Phoenix, where 24 of the 25 pilfered rodents were recovered, the release said. One guinea pig had died.

The two unidentified girls and the 47-year-old mother of one of the teens, are still being investigated in connection with the guinea pigs heist. The release noted that the mother β€œis known to the animal rescue.”

Any criminal charges will be reviewed by the Pima County Attorney’s Office, the release said.
