A Tucson man implicated in a fatal hit-and-run crash earlier this month asked a judge during his initial court appearance Friday to release him so he could pickup his paycheck.
Instead Christopher Flores CaΓ±ez, 26, was ordered held on a $50,000 bond on suspicion of fleeing the crash that occurred about 10 p.m. Nov. 3, and killed an unidentified man crossing East Broadway just east of North Kolb Road.
According to an interim complaint in Pima County Justice Court, numerous car parts belonging to a Chevrolet pick-up truck or SUV were found at the crash scene.
Nearly an hour after the crash, a 911 call reported several people pushing a broken Chevrolet Tahoe into a gas station parking lot near South Houghton and East Golf Links roads. Witnesses identified CaΓ±ezΒ as the sole occupant of the vehicle, which had damage consistent with being involved in a collision, the complaint said.
CaΓ±ezΒ gave police multiple reasons for the damage to his vehicle, but officers at the scene were unaware of the fatal crash earlier.
CaΓ±ezΒ was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and he was released on scene, the complaint says.
Information about the incident was not shared with officers investigating the pedestrian fatality until the next morning, according to the interim complaint. It said vehicle parts collected at the pedestrian crash scene matched broken vehicle parts on the Tahoe.
