A 28-year-old man who pleaded guilty to importation of fentanyl was sentenced in Arizona to more than 5 years in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office says.

Francisco Nicolas Orozco-Montijo, a U.S. citizen who was living in Nogales, Sonora, was sentenced on May 8 to 63 months in prison followed by 60 months of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Márquez.

Orozco-Montijo had applied for entry into the U.S. from Mexico via the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona, in March last year. While searching his vehicle, Customs and Border Protection agents found more than 50 kilograms of fentanyl hidden in the spare tire and rear quarter panels of the car, prosecutors said.

Orozco-Montijo pleaded guilty on Feb. 5 this year.

The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations. The prosecution was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona.
