A 23-year-old man was fatally shot Friday afternoon while driving on Tucson's east side near the city's William M. Clements recreational and fitness center, police said.

The Tucson Police Department gave the following account in a news release Saturday:

Officers were called at about 2 p.m. Jan. 26 to a report of a shooting victim found in the 8100 block of East Poinciana Drive.

They began rendering CPR and other aid to the man, who had gunshot trauma. Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived and took the victim to St. Joseph's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Several hours later, just after 9:30 p.m., the man, Devon Sullivan Thompson, died of his injuries.

Detectives determined "the victim was driving a black Dodge Challenger on Poinciana Dr. when he was approached by an unknown group. Gunshots were fired after which the group fled the area, and the victim drove to a large parking lot where his vehicle struck the building" and stopped, police said.

Police said they don't know the names of shooters nor a motive.

They ask anyone with information on the homicide to call 9-1-1, or 88-CRIME where they can remain anonymous.Β
