A 41-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash early Wednesday on Tucson’s south side, police say.

The 41-year-old woman was in the turn lane on South Sixth Avenue near West 44th Street about 1 a.m. when she was struck by a swerving car. Her name was withheld pending family notification, Tucson police said Wednesday in a news release.

The driver fled after the crash, the release said.

The woman was about 60 feet south of a marked crosswalk when she was struck, the release said.

The hit-and-run driver was traveling north on Sixth Avenue and β€œswerved from the median lane, (drove)through the universal lane, left of center and back into the turn lane,” striking the woman.

Police say they do not know why the driver swerved and no description of the possible vehicle was available.

Police say they are working to identify the driver.
