A man using crutches as he crossed a street on the cityโ€™s south side Tuesday night died after being struck by an ice cream truck, police say.

Basil Eleando, 39, was crossing South Sixth Avenue in the middle of the block near Oklahoma Street about 10:20 p.m. when he was struck.

Officers on patrol witnessed the crash and rushed over to help.

Eleando died a short time later at University of Arizona Banner Hospital, police said in a news release.

The driver of the ice cream truck stayed at the crash scene and cooperated with police. She was not cited and speed and impairment do not appear to have been factors in the wreck, police said.
