A woman who was fatally struck by a van Tuesday morning on Tucson's west side was identified as Leeann Marie Sanchez, police said.

Sanchez, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on West 36th Street, west of South Lands End Road.

The neighborhood is west of South Mission Road.

Officers and Tucson Fire paramedics responded to the area about 6:15 a.m. to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

Sanchez was found in the road, Bay said.

Traffic detectives learned that Sanchez was walking east on 36th Street on the south side of the road.

A 1998 Dodge van also was traveling east on 36th Street, and the driver saw Sanchez, and moved the vehicle away from her, Bay said. She said Sanchez stepped into the lane of travel and was struck by the van.

The van's driver remained at the scene and witnesses gave Sanchez aid until paramedics arrived, said Bay.

Investigators said neither speed or impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

Since Jan. 1, this is the first traffic fatality in the city, compared to two fatalities at this time last year, according to police data.
