A 72-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault after a road-rage incident early Sunday morning in Cochise County, officials say.

The incident started about 2 a.m. when Eugene Hinbaugh was forced off the road by a pickup truck that had moved into his lane on a dirt road that had significant ruts from recent rains. Hinbaugh’s Honda hit a fence, Carol Capas, a spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department, said in a news release.

Hinbaugh followed the other vehicle, a 2004 Toyota Tundra, and rammed it three times on Hereford Road, Capas said.

The truck driver then stopped and fired at the Honda several times with a a semi-automatic AK-47 gun, Capas said.

Hinbaugh was not wounded. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and endangerment.

The investigation into the actions of the pickup truck driver are still under investigation.
