John David Ward

Tucson police have arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of hitting a bicyclist with his car and leaving the scene early Sunday morning, authorities said.

John David Ward was booked into the Pima County jail Thursday on one felony count of leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, according to a post on Tucson Police Department's Facebook page.

On Wednesday, police released surveillance video and photos of the suspect and vehicle involved in crash, leading to multiple tips that led them to Ward, the post said.

Police responded to reports of a hit-and-run involving just after 2 a.m. Sunday, in the area of West Rillito Street and North 11th Avenue.

Officers located the man who was riding the bicycle, and paramedics arrived to transport the man to a local hospital. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered from life-threatening injuries.

Police learned that the bicyclist was traveling north on 11th Avenue approaching West Rillito. The driver of a white vehicle ran a stop sign and made a wide turn, striking the bicyclist before leaving the scene, police said.

The bicyclist is still in critical condition.
