The University of Arizona has chosen Craig T. Nelson, an Emmy-Award-winning actor, writer, director and producer, to deliver the university’s commencement address on May 10.

Nelson, who graduated from the UA in 1969, is known for voicing Mr. Incredible in the 2004 Pixar film β€œThe Incredibles,” as well as for television roles as Hayden Fox in β€œCoach” and Zeek Braverman in β€œParenthood.”

β€œCraig T. Nelson’s career embodies the determination and exploration that we hope to inspire in all our graduates,” UA President Robert C. Robbins said in a written statement. β€œSpeaking from his experience β€” both in life and as a Wildcat β€” Nelson will urge graduates to make bold decisions as they start their careers.”

The ceremony on May 10 will be held at Arizona Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Nelson’s role in β€œCoach” led him to multiple Emmy nominations, with a win in 1992 for Outstanding Lead Actor. He took to Broadway in β€œAh, Wilderness!” and stared in the films β€œPoltergeist,” β€œThe Proposal” and β€œThe Family Stone.”

Actor Craig T. Nelson, who attended the University of Arizona on a drama scholarship, waves to the crowd at the 1990 UA Homecoming parade on the UA Mall.

While at the UA, Nelson studied under Peter R. Marroney, who led the university’s theater department for 36 years. According to a news release from the university, Nelson credits his time working with Marroney for much of his career success.

In 2018 the actor returned to Tucson to β€œmeet with students and take part in the launch of the public phase of a fundraising campaign to renovate Marroney Theatre,” according to the university.

This February, after the renovations were completed, the theater’s stage was named after Nelson himself.

β€œHaving my name associated with the theater named for an early mentor of mine, Peter Marroney, is a humbling honor,” Nelson said at the time. β€œTo the students who will benefit from this renewed facility: Follow your heart and dreams as you embark on a wonderful vocation that has given me so much.”
