An Immaculate Heart High School senior was selected to compete on in one of the most prestigious pre-college science competitions.

Amanda Catherine Minke, 17, was selected as a scholar for the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the alumni of which have gone on to win top honors, including the Nobel Prize.Β 

Minke is one of 300 students nationwide who were selected as scholars. Only 40 of those scholars will move on to the next round in Washington D.C. to display their work and compete for a grand prize of $250,000.

The senior's project presented the characterization of the capacity of chlorophyta to remove ionic lead from water.

She was previously selected by the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in May 2016.
