Pima Animal Care Center is hosting a free pet adoption event at five PetSmart stores in Tucson as part of a nationwide animal-welfare charity.

The county's animal care center will participate in the event Feb. 17-19 during PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend, according to a news release.

Dozens of the center's dogs and cats will be available for adoption each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following PetSmart stores:

  • 4374 N. Oracle Road at West Wetmore Road
  • El Con, 3695 E. Broadway, between Home Depot and Target
  • Tucson Spectrum, 1175 W. Irvington Road, west of Interstate 19
  • 3850 W. River Road, south of West Orange Grove Road
  • 4740 E. Grant at North Swan Road (this location will only have cats)

Adoption fees will be waived for qualified families, and all pets will be spayed or neutered, have their vaccinations, are microchipped, and each pet will have a free veterinary visit voucher, officials said. A $17 licensing fee will apply to all adult dogs.

Officials at the animal care center hope to find families for 100 pets during the weekend event.

PetSmart Charities awarded the animal care center a $4,000 grant to underwrite the event, states the news release.

The animal care center also will honor the free adoption special all weekend at its shelter, 4000 N. Silverbell Road. The shelter opens from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
